Bacteriostatic Water for Research Use

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is used in laboratory settings for the reconstitution of lyophilized (freeze-dried) research compounds, peptides, and proteins. Alpha Tides PNW supplies BAC water in 30mL multi-use vials for laboratory reconstitution workflows.

Why Use Bacteriostatic Water?

Unlike sterile water for injection, bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth after the vial is opened. This allows multiple withdrawals from a single vial over a period of up to 28 days, making it the preferred solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research compounds in multi-use laboratory protocols.

Reconstitution Guidelines

When reconstituting lyophilized compounds, slowly inject BAC water along the inside wall of the vial containing the lyophilized powder. Do not shake — allow the compound to dissolve naturally or gently swirl. The bacteriostatic preservative supports repeated sterile access over the working life of the reconstituted vial.

Storage & Handling

  • Unopened: Store at room temperature (15–25°C), away from direct light.
  • After opening: Keep the vial sealed between uses and discard within 28 days.
  • Handling: Use sterile technique for every withdrawal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bacteriostatic water is used to reconstitute lyophilized research compounds, peptides, and proteins in laboratory settings. Its benzyl alcohol preservative allows a single vial to be accessed multiple times over roughly 28 days.

Sterile water for injection contains no preservative and is intended for single use. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth and supports multiple withdrawals from the same vial in multi-use research workflows.

Once opened, bacteriostatic water is typically used within 28 days when kept sealed between uses and stored at room temperature away from light.

Most lyophilized research peptides and compounds are reconstituted with bacteriostatic water. See the reconstitution guide linked below for compound-specific technique and solvent-volume considerations.
