At minimum, a research materials supplier should be able to show:
- A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis β not a generic purity claim reused across every batch, but a document tied to the specific lot being sold, ideally viewable before you order rather than sent only on request.

- Consistent identity and purity results across batches β occasional outlier results happen, but a supplier should be transparent about them rather than only publishing the clean ones.
- Clear sourcing language β a supplier that can describe, even briefly, where and how a compound is produced and verified is a different proposition than one that treats sourcing as proprietary and unexaminable.
Red Flags Worth Taking Seriously
Some warning signs are easy to miss if you’re only looking at price and shipping speed:
- No batch numbers anywhere β if a product page, invoice, or COA never references a specific batch or lot, there’s no way to trace a purity claim back to the material actually shipped.
- COAs that never change β the same static PDF reused indefinitely across restocks is a sign that testing isn’t happening per batch, whatever the page copy implies.
- Testing lab that can’t be identified β “third-party tested” without naming who did the testing isn’t independently verifiable.
- Purity claims with no accompanying methodology β a number alone (“99% pure”) means little without knowing what test method produced it (HPLC, mass spectrometry, etc.) and what it was tested against.
- Pressure-oriented sales language β countdown timers, exaggerated scarcity, or urgency-driven discounting have nothing to do with material quality and are more common with suppliers that don’t want scrutiny on the documentation side.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Order
A few direct questions tend to separate documented suppliers from undocumented ones quickly:
- Can I see the Certificate of Analysis for this specific batch before I order, not just a generic one for the product line?
- Which independent lab performed the testing, and what method did they use?
- What happens if a batch fails testing β is it still sold?

Documentation Beyond the COA
A Certificate of Analysis confirms identity and purity, but it isn’t the only documentation worth checking.
